About the Job
The Rail Car Mechanic is responsible for inspecting and repairing below-deck railcar components and performing non-prep repairs to the railcar superstructure (rack). All repairs must be completed safely and in compliance with AAR and FRA standards.

Qualifications:
  • AWS D15.1 Welding Certification (3G).
  • Experience using a cutting torch.
  • Experience with grinders, impact wrenches, drills, and other power tools.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools.
  • Ability to accurately read a tape measure. 
  • Ability to work overhead and in physically demanding environments.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, squat, and kneel as needed.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to safely climb ladders while maintaining three points of contact.
  • Ability to wear required PPE, including a welding helmet, safety glasses, gloves, and other protective equipment.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Inspect below-deck mechanical components to identify wear, damage, and defects.
  • Repair or replace air hoses, cut levers, knuckles, knuckle pins, brake shoes, and other railcar components.
  • Perform welding and cutting repairs using hand and power tools.
  • Repair or replace grating and railcar deck components.
  • Repair rusted areas of railcar decks.
  • Paint repaired surfaces as needed.
  • Inspect completed work to ensure proper operation and quality.
  • Complete work orders and maintain accurate repair records.
  • Perform other duties related to the repair and maintenance of below-deck components and railcar superstructures.
